The
75th Academy Awards® for outstanding film achievements of 2002 will
be presented on Sunday, March 23, 2003, at the Kodak Theatre at
Hollywood & Highland.
The awards will be hosted this year by the one and only, Steve Martin!
There are plenty of nominees and even more excitement. Following the
yearly tradition, here are my predictions. (Last year I had a sweet
record, with only two
wrong - both surprising moves on behalf of the Academy)
And
The Golden Guy Will (Or Rather SHOULD) Walk Away With...
==========================================
- PREDICTIONS - 75TH AWARDS -
==========================================
Performance by an actor in a leading role
This is a TOUGH category this year with so many worth nominees. Most
notably Adrien Brody ("The Pianist"), Daniel Day-Lewis
("Gangs of New York") and Jack Nicholson ("About
Schmidt"). There will be many split votes between the three and
personally this one is tough for me to nail down. If all goes safely,
Daniel Day-Lewis will get it, however, I have a feeling that Adrien
Brody will turn out as the surprise winner.
Performance by an actor in a supporting role
This is really between two terrific actors Paul Newman
for "Road to Perdition" and Christopher Walken for "Catch Me If You Can."
Paul Newman is the more likely candidate though.
Performance by an actress in a leading role
She didn't get it for Moulin Rouge and many Academy voters liked The
Hours, so Nicole Kidman seems like our 'it' girl. Personally though, I'd
place my vote elsewhere.
Performance by an actress in a supporting role
I'm going to just ignore all the other candidates on this one and
just say where I think the Oscar SHOULD go. I have not seen anyone show
so much power, charm, talent and will this year as Catherine Zeta-Jones
did in "Chicago." She is the most deserving, but Julianne
Moore and Meryl Streep are more likely to win. I'll stand by Catherine
all the way though -- and not just because we share the same name.
Best animated feature film of the year
Ice Age, Lilo & Stitch and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron are
the candidates with the most potential. Spirit is very likely to get it,
despite my utter dislike for the movie (just because I cried, it does
not deserve an Oscar). I'll place my bet on Lilo & Stitch.
Achievement in art direction
"Chicago" (Miramax)
Achievement in cinematography
"Road to Perdition" (DreamWorks and 20th Century Fox) Conrad
L. Hall
Achievement in costume design
"Chicago" (Miramax, Colleen Atwood) will be the likely winner,
however, "Frida" (Miramax, Julie Weiss) still has a strong chance!
Achievement in directing
This is between Chicago's Rob Marshall and Martin Scorsese (the movie is
pretty irrelevant in his nomination. Folks just want Marty to win &
Polanski has a criminal record). Rob
Marshall is first-time film director, with a strong theatre background.
What he achieved with "Chicago" is simply dazzling... The
verdict: Rob Marshall.
Best documentary feature
"Bowling for Columbine" has been talked and talked and
talked...about. It will be a shock if it does not win.
Best foreign language film of the year
Just a shot in the dark: "El Crimen del Padre Amaro"
An Alameda Films/BluFilms/Foprocine/Gob. del Estado de Veracruz-Llave
Production
Mexico
Best Short Film
The Charming Man (Just a psychic guess. Besides, I like charm.
Don't you?)
Achievement in makeup (out of the only two eligible films)
"Frida" (Miramax) John Jackson and Beatrice De Alba
Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score)
Kind of tough to decide, but "Catch Me If You Can" (DreamWorks) John Williams
and Thomas Newman "Road To Perdition" have the best shots.
Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original song)
In theme of being the "Chicago" fan that I am. My Oscar-y
goes to:
"I Move On" from "Chicago" (Miramax)
Music by John Kander
Lyric by Fred Ebb
8 Mile's excellent song also has a fair chance, but I'm not sure if the
Academy would go for it...maybe they should. None of the other songs are
even in the same category as the two above.
Best motion picture of the year
We all know that this run is between "Gangs of New York" and "Chicago."
So who's going to get it? With the leading number of nominations,
"Chicago" seems like a sure thing. And I'm glad.
CHICAGO
(Miramax)
A Producer Circle Co., Zadan/Meron Production
Martin Richards, Producer
Achievement in sound
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" (New Line)
Christopher Boyes, Michael Semanick, Michael Hedges and Hammond Peek
Achievement in sound editing
"Minority Report" (20th Century Fox and DreamWorks)
Richard Hymns and Gary Rydstrom
Achievement in visual effects
Spider-Man, Spider-Man...doing what the spider can! Grabbing that Oscar
by the web - literally. But I have a last moment gut feeling that Lord
of the Rings' 'Golin' will grab it out of his web.
Adapted screenplay
"Adaptation" (Sony Pictures Releasing)
Screenplay by Charlie Kaufman and Donald Kaufman
Proper, ain't it?
Original screenplay
Everyone loved it, saw it a billion times and then recommended that
their friends pay to see it:
"My Big Fat Greek Wedding" (IFC/Gold Circle Films)
Written by Nia Vardalos
